Why You Should Not Wear Gel Polish for Too Long
Many people have probably heard stories about nails being damaged or infected after gel polish manicures. One of the main reasons this happens is wearing the coating for too long or not following your nail technician’s recommendations.
All professional products come with manufacturer guidelines. Some recommend changing gel every two weeks. However, based on my more than 10 years of professional experience and observing real client results, I have determined that the most optimal and comfortable maintenance interval is no more than 4 weeks.
Many clients prefer monthly appointments because it is convenient and economical. I also believe that maintaining nails every 4 weeks is safer than filing the natural nail every two weeks — which would mean twice per month and up to 24 times per year.
But what happens if these recommendations are ignored?
With proper application, gel polish can sometimes last visually for more than two months. However, after about 4 weeks, your natural nail plate begins to slowly weaken underneath the coating.
As the nail grows, the gel changes position and begins to create pressure on the stress zone (the middle of the nail). This can cause lifting, peeling, and small chips along the sides. Clients often notice this when their hair starts catching on the edges.
At this stage, the natural nail can begin to curve from the pressure, and the upper layers of the nail plate may start to break down.
How can infection happen in this situation?
Even a small lifting of the gel combined with moisture exposure can create the conditions for fungal infection. After 4 weeks, the risk of this situation increases significantly.
If the nails are worn too long and become damaged, the next service often requires rebuilding the broken areas. This may cause heat sensitivity in the lamp (which increases the risk of nail plate discomfort), and the procedure may be less comfortable because the natural nails are already compromised.
I can give you the best manicure possible, but if you do not take care of your hands and follow maintenance recommendations, no design can protect your nail health.
